What three log file analyses show
Key points:
- In our own server logs and in a client project, no major AI crawler requested llms.txt.
- The tänzer:hosting analysis across all its servers attributes 12 of 3,899 requests (0.3%) to AI training.
- Most requests come from SEO and AI visibility tools and from callers with a normal browser user agent.
- OpenAI and Anthropic, on the other hand, regularly fetch robots.txt and normal pages.
llms.txt is based on a proposal by Jeremy Howard from September 2024. The Markdown file is meant to give language models an overview of a website’s most important content. I explain its structure and origins in our knowledge article on llms.txt. This post deals with a simpler question that log files can answer: who actually requests the file?
| Analysis | Period | Data | llms.txt requests | Of which AI crawlers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Our own server | 15 to 22 October 2026 | around 5.1 million log lines | 146 requests | 0 |
| Client project | 10 days | around 12 million log lines, website without llms.txt | no request from major AI crawlers | 0 |
| taenzer.de | As of 2 November 2026 | all tänzer:hosting servers, 158 websites with requests | 3,899 | 12, classed as AI training |
