Prompt monitoring

A fixed set of prompts runs regularly in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. We see whether and where you are mentioned, which competitors appear and which pages serve as sources.

AI crawlers in the log files

Your server log files show which pages ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and others actually fetch, how often and with what result. We filter out fake bots using the providers’ official IP lists and, where none exist, reverse DNS checks.

AI traffic in analytics

Since May 2026, GA4 has grouped visits from recognised AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot in the default “AI Assistant” channel. We check whether the attribution is correct for your website and also tell you what cannot be measured, so that you do not draw the wrong conclusions.

Mentions and share of voice

How often does your brand appear, in which position and how large is your share compared with your competitors? Broken down by topic and AI system. Find out more in the article on AI visibility.

Cited sources and link rate

Which of your pages are linked as a source and how often? Which other websites do the systems cite instead?

Factual errors

We flag answers in which prices, addresses or services are stated incorrectly and track whether corrections come through.

AI crawlers and 404 errors

Requests from AI crawlers, verified against the official IP lists, and URLs that AI systems invent. For these, we draw up a redirect list.

AI traffic and conversions

Sessions and conversions from AI assistants in GA4, in the default “AI Assistant” channel and, where needed, in a custom channel group, for example for Perplexity.

Reporting

A clear report showing developments, causes and next steps. On request as a dashboard.

1

Defining the prompt set

We take over the prompt set from the audit or create a new one, including brand names, spelling variants and competitors.

2

Checking the tracking

We check whether AI sources are recorded properly in GA4 and, if needed, set up a dedicated channel group for AI traffic.

3

Connecting log files

Where possible, we regularly receive extracts of your server log files and analyse them with our own scripts.

4

Measuring regularly

The prompts run at fixed intervals. This lets us spot changes after model updates or after your own measures.

5

Report and regular meeting

We discuss the developments with you and put outliers into context. Individual answers vary; what counts is the trend.

6

Deriving actions

The data points to the next steps for AI SEO and your content.

 The limits of measurement

What can be measured and what cannot

AI traffic is harder to measure than classic search traffic. We are open about where the figures end.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: in GA4, clicks from Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode remain in the “Organic Search” channel and cannot be analysed separately there. In Search Console they count towards the “Web” search type. Since 31 August 2026, the “Generative AI performance report” in Search Console has shown how often links to your website appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, but only as impressions, without clicks and without queries. Earlier tracking approaches using text fragments in the URL no longer work because Google has changed these links.
  • ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and others: since May 2026, GA4 has grouped visits from recognised AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot in the default “AI Assistant” channel. Google does not publish a complete list of the sources it recognises, and Perplexity, for example, is not named there. Where needed, we assign such sources using a custom channel group. GA4 cannot attribute visits without a recognisable referrer, for example from some apps, to an AI assistant.
  • Influence without a click: many people read the AI answer and search for your brand directly later. This shows up as direct or brand search, not as AI traffic.
  • Log files: requests from ChatGPT-User and similar agents happen when someone asks a question, but also because of monitoring tools. We therefore report them as an upper limit.
 AI monitoring in practice

What our clients learn from monitoring

More links to the organisation’s own website: for a large organisation, we measured 150 prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude in June and in September 2026. The share of answers with a link to its website rose from 69% to 81%. We achieved this through content optimisation, above all by putting the answer first and making the information on the pages more precise. For the mostly brand-related questions, the organisation was named first in 93% of answers. In GA4, sessions from AI sources from 1 January to 17 September were around 90% higher than in the same period of the previous year. How much of this is due to individual measures cannot be cleanly separated.

What the log files reveal: over ten days (August and September 2026), we counted almost 29,000 requests from ChatGPT-User, an average of around 2,900 a day, to be read as an upper limit, including all 100 pages with the most Google clicks. 15% of Claude’s requests ended on 404 pages because the model had invented URLs. A crawler run by a large platform operator kept loading the same files in a loop, including a single 32 MB image. Findings like these only show up in log files.
