About Ralph

Why I founded Rheinwunder.

“I started out in 1999 as a web designer and developer. In 2003 my marketing manager in Chester decided I should look after SEO, and I have stuck with it ever since, many of those years as an SEO consultant in London.

In 2012 I founded Rheinwunder in Bonn. The idea behind it: online marketing and the technology behind it belong in one pair of hands. That has not changed to this day.”

Today Ralph runs Rheinwunder together with Olga Grundmann. He takes care of the technical side: technical SEO, GEO, tracking, e-commerce and product data.

Ralph combines three things that rarely come together in online marketing: a background in web development, more than 20 years of search practice and a real enjoyment of passing on knowledge.

Search since 2003

Ralph learnt search engine optimisation in the UK, first in Chester, then in London. Today he helps companies become visible on Google and in AI answers. Find out more under SEO and GEO.

Technology and measurability

Tracking, server-side set-ups, log file analyses, product feeds and our own tools. Among other things, Rheinwunder has developed appariq.ai for measuring AI visibility and the Feed Manager for ChatGPT product feeds.

Passing on knowledge

At FOM University of Applied Sciences in Bonn, Ralph taught the Online Marketing module. He holds the German trainer qualification (AEVO), and Rheinwunder has trained apprentices since 2013. In our knowledge section he explains technical terms clearly.

1999–2003

Web design and web development, most recently as eBusiness Manager, Münster region

2003–2006

The Funding Corporation

Internet Marketing Specialist at the motor finance lender in Chester, England, known for its ACF Car Finance brand. This is where Ralph came to search engine optimisation in 2003: his marketing manager at the time decided that he should take care of SEO.

2006–2007

The Search Works

SEO Manager in London at the search marketing agency of The IMW Group (clients included easyJet, Asda and Interflora), acquired by TradeDoubler in 2007.

2006–2012

AWESEM Limited

Founded the online marketing agency AWESEM Limited in Chester, England, with a business partner, Managing Director from 2007. In 2008 the German company AWESEM Limited & Co. KG followed, based in Hamburg.

2008–2020

DBD Media

Senior SEO Adviser for the London performance marketing agency founded in 2000 (PPC, SEO, influencer marketing) working with hospitality, retail and fashion brands.

2012

Founding of Rheinwunder

After parting ways with his business partner, Ralph transfers the online marketing business into Rheinwunder UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co. KG and moves the company from Hamburg to Bonn.

2013

First apprentice

Rheinwunder takes on its first apprentice. Since then, the agency has trained most of its staff itself, today in five IHK-certified professions.

2013–2021

Coworking Bonn

Owner. At first the office was too big for the four-person Rheinwunder team, so Ralph rented out the spare desks as coworking spaces. The coworking space stayed closed during the coronavirus pandemic, and afterwards Rheinwunder needed the space itself.

2017

Rheinwunder GmbH

Change of legal form: Rheinwunder UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co. KG becomes Rheinwunder GmbH; Olga Grundmann becomes second Managing Director.

2018–2019

FOM University of Applied Sciences

Lecturer for the Online Marketing module at FOM University of Applied Sciences in Bonn. Topics included advertising objectives, tracking of online and offline sales, mobile first and business and web metrics. Students finished by drawing up their own online marketing plan with objectives, measures and KPIs.

2019–2023

Plastikalternative GmbH

Managing Shareholder of a side project: Plastikalternative GmbH imported products made from bagasse, the fibre left over when sugar cane is processed, from Thailand and sold them through its own online shop.

Qualifications

Education, teaching and certifications

Background: studied at Fachhochschule Dortmund (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund), started in practice in 1999 as a web designer and web developer, in search engine optimisation since 2003.
Teaching: lecturer at FOM University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management in Bonn (academic year 2018/19) for the Online Marketing module.
Training: German trainer qualification (AEVO). Rheinwunder has trained apprentices since 2013 and now offers five IHK-certified apprenticeships: marketing communications, office management, e-commerce, software development and systems integration. Find out more under Careers.
