What is Answer Engine Optimisation?
An answer engine responds to a question with an answer rather than a list of results. Early examples are highlighted answer boxes in Google Search and voice assistants. Today, AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews belong to this group too.
AEO describes the work of getting your own content selected for such answers. The term predates Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) and was long used mainly in connection with featured snippets and voice search. There is no binding definition. In practice, AEO and GEO are now often used almost interchangeably.
AEO, GEO and SEO compared
- SEO aims for strong positions in organic search results and for clicks.
- AEO aims to be selected as the direct answer, whether in a snippet, a voice assistant or an AI answer.
- GEO aims for mentions, source links and accurate representation in generative AI answers and puts more weight on how the brand is perceived beyond its own website.
Google itself does not separate these disciplines. In its guide to generative AI search, Google describes AEO and GEO as terms for work that, from the perspective of Google Search, is still SEO.
How answer engines select content
For featured snippets, Google’s documentation says that automated systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a query. There is no markup you can use to apply for one. For the AI features in Google Search, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet in order to be linked as a source (Search Central).
AI systems also search for more than the original question. In AI Mode and AI Overviews, Google may break questions down into sub-questions, see query fan-out. A section that precisely answers one of these sub-questions can therefore serve as a source even if the page does not rank for the main question.
Making content answer-ready
- Question as heading: phrase subheadings the way your audience asks.
- Answer first: answer the question in the first one or two sentences below the heading. Details, exceptions and examples follow afterwards.
- Lists and tables: steps, requirements and comparisons are easier to reuse as a list or table than as running text.
- Unambiguous details: always state figures with their unit, reference and date. Use terms consistently.
- One topic per page: one page that answers a question thoroughly is clearer than many thin variants. Internal links connect related questions.
- Structured data: schema.org markup makes sense when it accurately reflects the visible content. Google stresses, however, that it is not required for generative search.
This does not mean breaking text into small fragments. Google’s guide makes clear that this is not necessary for generative search. Well-structured text with headings and paragraphs is enough.
Limits of AEO
When a question is answered directly in search or in a chat, the click to the website may not happen. That is why AEO is not only about the link but also about whether the brand and the key message appear correctly in the answer itself. AI answers also vary, and not every wording can be reproduced. Whether measures have an effect only becomes clear through repeated measurement, see AI visibility.
AEO in practice
One client project with a winery that runs an online shop shows how much generic questions matter. In September 2026, we analysed 50 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, 150 answers in total. For prompts containing the brand name, the winery appeared in 21 of 24 answers. For generic questions, such as requests for wine recommendations from the region, it appeared in only 26 of 126 answers. A regional competitor appeared in 59 of 126.
If you are missing from generic questions, you need content that answers exactly those questions, plus mentions in the sources AI systems rely on. We support this as part of our AI SEO services.
