Duplicate content is a critical issue in the field of search engine optimization (SEO) and can significantly affect the visibility of your website. With duplicate content available on different URLs, you risk not only low rankings, but also potential penalties from search engines.

What is Duplicate Content?

The term Duplicate Content raises alarm bells for SEO experts, as it should be avoided if one wants to secure a good ranking position in search engines. In the SEO world, Duplicate Content refers to duplicate content; that is, the content of the website is not unique but can be accessed via multiple URLs. If different websites with the same content are indexed by Google, it is referred to as Duplicate Content. If the algorithm recognizes this, the website is classified as low quality and relegated to lower ranking positions. In the worst case, Google may exclude the website from the index because the content should not be duplicated in the SERPs.

Examples of Duplicate Content: An Offense with Consequences

The task of the Google algorithm is to separate the wheat from the chaff. Which page is considered valuable for users and which is classified as low quality depends on numerous factors that are crucial for the ranking position. An important ranking factor is the assessment of the content by the Google algorithm. To better identify duplicate content, the Brandy Update and the Bourbon Update were rolled out in 2004 and 2005. The goal is to avoid not only duplicate content in search results, as it provides no added value for users, but also to protect content – especially unique texts – from theft.

There are various ways in which Duplicate Content can arise. Plagiarism, selling, and content syndication are particularly popular.

Content Syndication: When the creator makes their content available for other websites. By publishing on other websites that reach a larger audience than the creator, the content can generate more reach. At the same time, link building can positively influence the ranking. The goal is to create a positive “feedback effect.”

However, syndication also carries risks. If there is no proper labeling in the HTML, the page will be penalized by Google and either excluded from the index or relegated to a lower ranking position. Additionally, Duplicate Content can lead to a loss of the uniqueness of one's own website.

Duplicate Content can also occur accidentally, for example, due to technical errors during page construction, such as when the content is displayed under a different domain or subdomains (e.g., domain with and without “www”). The use of certain text modules in different categories of the site, such as a landing page and a blog or news page, can also lead to this. Website filters can also result in the display of duplicate content if filtering different attributes yields the same product lists. And even if the content of a page revolves around a completely different topic and only individual teaser texts or small text modules are adopted, the algorithm may identify the website as Duplicate Content.

When Google identifies duplicate content, the algorithm decides which of the pages is more relevant to the search query. If the content is classified as manipulation or spam – or interpreted as such – Google will exclude the website from the index and rank it far behind.

Duplicate Content: Consequences for Search Engine Optimization

The antonym of Duplicate Content in search engine optimization is Unique Content. Those who can present Unique Content on their website are on the home stretch to higher ranking positions, as they provide users with unique added value.

Unique Content is an important ranking factor, as it determines whether a user stays on the page, receives relevant information, and whether the content offers them unique added value, or whether they click back into the search. The Bounce Rate and the Time On Site are among the indicators of how relevant the page is for the user’s search query.

Here, high-quality editorial content creation and the integration of keyword analysis, relevant keywords, and a meaningful and original page structure are crucial.
